Why do we need an OT Gown?

It is worn to protect the user from coming in contact with any infectious agents or illness through a patient. It may also help to prevent the wearer from transferring any micro-organisms which harm the susceptible patients with the poor immune system.

Must know while using an OT Gown

One should follow proper hand hygiene before and after using the surgical gown. The healthcare worker should always check whether the surgical gown covers whole clothing from front to back. They should also check if the gown fits securely.

One should not reuse the gown for the same or different patient even if they are reusable they should be used for a single time only. The surgical gowns that are contaminated should be removed and discarded in the designated area outside the patient’s room.

Make of an OT Gown

Commonly surgical gowns are made from a fabric called spun-bond melt-blown spun-bond (SMS). This fabric is light in weight and comfortable to wear and non-woven which provides a protective barrier. Most of the surgical gowns these days are disposable and made of various forms of synthetic fibres such as polyethene, polypropylene and polyester.

The surgical gowns have long sleeves with elastic cuffs and these also retain the sterile barrier between the surgical area and the surgeon’s clothes and uncovered arms. The gowns are made up of breathable tightly woven water-resistant fabric due to which there is a decrease in the bacterial count in the operating rooms.
